Last year, over 6,000 liver transplants were performed in the United States, 515 of which were performed in Texas. The bad news is that close to 1300 additional people are waiting for a liver transplant. Over the past 10 years, the number a patients waiting for transplant has grown steadily, while the number of organ donors has remained relatively flat during this time.
Because of the lack of organ donors, up to 25% of all those waiting for a liver transplant will not survive the wait. There just are not enough donor organs to go around for everyone!

Organ donation is commonly misunderstood, resulting in a lack of interest in such a life saving decision. Despite continuing efforts at public education, myths about donation persist. It''s a tragedy if even one person decides against donation because of false information.

The first step in becoming an organ donor is a discussion with your family about your wishes. A single organ and tissue donor can save the lives of many individuals, allowing them a second chance at life.
